TACOMA YACHT CLUB - JUNIOR SAILING
DESIGNED WITH YOUR CHILD IN MIND
Our program staff are dedicated to providing a hands-on and personalized experience for all children regardless of experience.
We use sailing to encourage each child to attain their own level of comfort on the water, and to instill cooperative values with others.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
CORE VALUES
-
To teach seamanship and sailing skills in a safe environment.
-
To enable students to acquire life-long values of sportsmanship, consideration, teamwork and self-reliance.
-
To teach how to sail to the best of one's ability and interest, and encourage skill and competence as an individual and a team.
-
To build basic skills toward more competitive sailing experiences.
TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
Many of our instructors are former students in our program. Their knowledge and enthusiasm are evident as they seek to bring the next generation of sailors forward. We are proud of those who have gone on to become world-class racers, and are working as professionals in many different aspects of sailing.
SCHOLARSHIP
Our goal is to never turn a student away for financial reasons. A limited amount of financial aid is available through donations. Click here for a scholarship application. For further information, please contact us at info@gigharborjuniorsailing.org
OUR HISTORY
OUR ROOTS
The Tacoma Yacht Club began a summer junior sailing program in 1992 when Bill Nelson took on the responsibility of building not only the program but all of the assets we enjoy today. His dedication to the children, his ability to bring resources and people to positions of leadership provided a strong foundation for today's program.
TODAY'S LEADERSHIP
In 2014, the Tacoma Yacht Club assumed administrative and financial responsibility for the Junior Sail program. The Junior Sailing Committee now oversees the direction of the program in cooperation with the TYC Board of Trustees. Any interested person is welcome to participate on the Junior Sail Committee and attend our meetings. We welcome the input of all parents and community members with an interest in the program.

THE FUTURE
With the development of the Junior Sail Sponsorship and Donor program, we are looking forward to growing our capability and expanding the range of those who support us. Maintaining a quality experience for our students and our instructors is primary. We will continue our connections with U.S. Sailing, and have high hopes for members of our Race Team as they explore the world of regattas around the northwest.
